What to Check When Buying a Second-Hand Car

Advice from Erin Panel Works

Buying a used car can be a smart move, but only if you know what to look for. At Erin Panel Works, we’ve seen how hidden rust, poor repairs, and dodgy paint jobs can cost buyers thousands later.

Here’s what to check before you buy:

  1. Inspect the Car in Natural Light

Always view the car during the day. Look for:

  • Mismatched paint between panels
  • Uneven surfaces (a sign of bad filler work)
  • Inconsistent panel gaps around doors, bonnet, and boot
  1. Check for Rust

Rust isn’t just cosmetic—it can be dangerous.
Focus on:

  • Wheel arches, door bottoms, sills
  • Around windows, under the bonnet, inside the boot
Tap the area lightly—if it sounds dull, rust may be hiding beneath.
  1. Examine the Paintwork

A shiny finish isn’t always a good sign.
Look for:

  • Overspray on rubber/plastic (rushed job)
  • Orange peel texture (poor quality)
  • Colour differences between panels (indicating past repairs)
  1. Look for Signs of Repairs

Some repairs are done well—others, not so much.

  • Clean-looking panels that don’t match the rest
  • Non-genuine (aftermarket) panels
  • Strange welding or sealant inside the bonnet or boot
  1. Test Doors, Bonnet & Boot

Open and close everything.

  • Sticky, sagging, or misaligned parts may indicate past damage
  1. Check Underneath

If possible, get under the car or have it lifted.
Watch for:

  • Bent jacking points or undercarriage
  • Leaks or fresh underbody spray (hiding rust)
  • Signs of impact damage
  1. Ask About Repair History

Request service and accident records. If it’s been in a crash:

  • Where was it repaired?
  • Were genuine parts used?
  • Has a professional panel shop inspected it?
  1. Get a Professional Panel Check

Better still, bring the car to Erin Panel Works before buying. We can check for:

  • Hidden structural damage
  • Poor panel alignment
  • Rust and low-quality spray jobs
